In the 1930's, Robert Dumas, son-in-law of Émile Hermès, whom he succeeded as director of Hermès (1951-1978), created the lady's bag with straps.
He designed a trapeze shape, two triangular gussets, a cut-out flap, a handle, two straps, and brought the house into the era of audacity and modernism thanks to his invention.
In the late 1950's, legend has it that Grace Kelly, Hollywood star turned Princess of Monaco, was photographed with the bag concealing the first curves of her pregnancy. The Kelly then acquired its definitive name and international fame.
